Although most of us have been reading all our lives, scientific literature is an entirely different format. Rarely in undergraduate classes does any professor actually explain how to digest scientific literature on your own, but by graduate school everyone is supposed to be fluent in academic writing. Fortunately, I had a professor at UGA, Dr. Patricia Moore, who taught a helpful method during her entomology class on how to read scientific papers and actually understand them. It was called the CREATE method (Consider, Read, Elucidate the hypotheses, Analyze and interpret the data, and Think of the next Experiment).
