Join us for a little “Spring Training,” as we aim to finish out the semester strong!
Categories and Point System
Give yourself 2 points for each task that prepares you for a current or future job, for a maximum of 6 points per day. (Set up an informational interview with someone in a field you’re interested in, Write/edit a section of a manuscript, Update your CV, Give a presentation of your work, Create/update a website about your work)
Give yourself 1 point for every 30 minutes you spend doing something that will broaden your perspectives, for a maximum of 4 points per day. (Attend a seminar outside your department, read a science blog, have a conversation with someone who has differing opinions, explore resources to reduce gender bias or increase diversity in your field)
Give yourself 2 points for each time you do something to boost your confidence, for a maximum of 4 points per day. (Write and say a confidence-building mantra, Write a list of the things you accomplished today)
Give yourself 3 points each time you do something to support your peers, for a maximum of 9 points per day. (Edit a peer's/student’s manuscript/grant proposal, edit a peer's homework assignment/class project, help your peers study for an exam, meet with a mentor/mentee, attend a thesis defense)
Give yourself 5 points if you had a significant academic achievement today. (Get an "A" on an assignment, earn an academic award, receive a compliment from a professor, receive a grant)
Give yourself 2 points if you worked on increasing your professional network. (Draw a web of people you consider mentors, attend a WiSci event, explore a new group, reach out to someone new)
Give yourself 3 points for a step you took to gain experience in your field. (Volunteer in field related to your career interests, apply for internship/technician/post-doc/other positions, shadow someone in your field, share your experience, offer shadowing experiences)
Give yourself 1 point for every 30 minutes spent working on your own research or learning about someone else’s research, for a maximum of 8 points per day. (Read an academic paper, attend a seminar, talk to someone else about their research, field work)
Give yourself 4 points if you put a significant amount of work into something with a deadline further than 2 days away. Give yourself 1 point for organizing your to-do list or completing a task you’ve been putting off.
Give yourself 3 points if you engaged in an outreach activity. (Explain a scientific concept to a stranger, write a blog post, give a presentation)
Give yourself 1 point for an activity that relieves your stress, for a maximum of 2 points per day. (Exercise, meditate, spend time with family/friends/pets, spend time outside, read a book for pleasure)
Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for access to your electronic score card, and tally your points at the end of each day for 20 days (April 4th to 23rd). The entry fee is $5, and at our end-of-the-semester social event, we will announce winners and distribute prizes!
There will be a prize for the top-scoring undergraduate, top-scoring graduate student, top-scoring post-doc/faculty member, AND a winner selected randomly from all entries.
While there is an air of competitiveness in this challenge, it is really designed to help us pay attention to the things we do each day that help us advance in our academic life and careers. See what categories you do well in, and which you can push yourself to improve.
There are suggestions of activities that fulfill each category, but points aren’t limited to the activities listed. Be creative! Also, if something you do fits into more than one category, you can count it for both in that day. Remember, we are working on the honor system here.
